Sleep. We all do it. Whether you're a pro athlete or champion of the little league, there's no doubt you'll want a good night's rest. In this series, we'll chat with some pros who dream on a Doze, to see how they get the sleep they need to be on top of their game.
Recently, we had the opportunity to speak with Morgan Brian-- midfielder for the U.S. Women's Soccer Team, FIFA Women's World Cup Champion, and Olympian--about balancing sleep, training, and travel with the help of her new Doze mattress.
Why is getting a good night's sleep important to you?
Being a professional athlete, I think it's something you need everyday. I can tell a huge difference in my training when I don't get a good night's sleep. So if I do sleep well it can really trickle over into all that I do, whether it's training to get better or just everyday life.
Would you consider yourself more of a night owl or a morning person?
I'm more of a night owl! I'm still in school, so homework usually keeps me up late at night.
Other than homework, do you have any bedtime rituals?
I enjoy reading and doing crossword puzzles on my phone right before bed.
What's the first thing you do after waking up?
Well, I put my contacts in first (because I can't see if I don't) and make sure I have breakfast because I'm typically training in the morning. Depending on the day, I might give myself thirty minutes to just lay in bed and rest. Then I get my day started pretty quickly after that.
Do you make your bed in the morning or leave it messy?
It kind of depends on the mood that day but typically...leave it. I only make it if I'm going on a trip because I like to come home to that perfectly made bed.
Anything you bring with you on the road to help you sleep better?
The past two years when we went to the World Cup and the Olympics, we thought it was really important to bring something from home to help aid our sleep while we were there. So, I brought a pillow and my blanket to make it feel more like my own home and bed. We also got into the idea of spraying a scent that you really like. I love lavender so I would spray that on my bed, which created a smell that stayed continuous no matter where I was in the world.
Is there something you do to calm your nerves for sleep the day before a big game?
Not necessarily! Some people have a hard time going to bed before a big day. For me, I don't really have a hard time falling asleep, which is a great problem not to have. An exception though was the day before my first World Cup final in 2015. It was a little bit harder to fall asleep that night--kind of like Christmas Eve but ten times crazier.
Do you have any memorable, whether good or bad, sleeping arrangements from playing soccer around the world?
Oh yeah, multiple. Normally they're pretty good about giving us good beds, but when we were in Brazil for the Olympics, it was extremely humid. So when we went to sleep, our sheets felt wet, which wasn't the best sleeping arrangement as you can imagine. They ended up getting us Minions blankets to keep us more comfortable. Making our beds everyday felt more like summer camp than the Olympics, which I really enjoyed.
Would you rather sleep in a cold room with lots of blankets or in a warm room with no blankets?
Oh, that's easy. Cold with lots of blankets, I love sleeping in the cold.
And lastly, how are you liking your Doze mattress?
I love it! I get a great night's sleep on it all the time. I like just laying in it besides sleeping too.
